Mannerism: From Michelangelo to Palladio

Updated: May 2, 2022

Villa Capra 'La Rotonda'

This lecture focused on the ideas of Mannerism and the architects and artists within this time period. It was particularly interesting to study all of the different people involved shaping the Italian Renaissance as well as todays modern architectural landscape.

Mannerism describes the transition period between the first 1500 crisis to the Baroque development. Giorgio Vasari described it as 'the tendency to be expressive and having style'.

From Michelangelo to the beginning of the Bemini (1620)

In this period, the trend was to codify the classical ideal assets in a precise formularity to provide rigid concepts with practical intentions. Mannerism can be put into two categories: 'codification of previous rules' - a standard common ground for several applications or 'regularly escape the rules' - create tension between rules and their infringements.

Michelangelo (1475-1564)

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer. In 1508, he decorated the vault of the Copella Sistina (The Sistine Chapel) in Rome, displaying elaborate art pieces and intricacy. He spent the last 30 years of his life in Rome.

Palladio (1508-1580)

Andrea Palladio was an architect active in the republic of Venice. He was influenced by Roman and Greek architecture, primarily by Vitruvius, and is widely considered the most influential individual in the history of western architecture. His buildings work in proportion, especially through music and ratio. Palladio's works cover 3 different categories: the urban palazzo, the agricultural villa and the church.

Overall, this lecture was immersive in the way that both the Italian, French and Spanish Renaissance cross over in terms of architectural style albeit different influences and key architects and artists. Influential individuals such as Michelangelo and Palladio are still known and recognised today, changing the modern ways of architectural design. I would say both Michelangelo and Palladio were as important as those architects from Greece and Rome as well as gothic architecture.
